Durham - Blues Fest 17...

Will be a great day - come along and rock...

Durham Blues Festival - More for 2017...

Bradford (UK) based duo 'They Called Him Zone' deliver news of their latest edition to the acts self-produced discography. The mini album 'Crow Swan Wolf' shall be their first release of 2017 and a sonically darker follow up to last years acclaimed 'Miami' EP.
Available from their Bandcamp page on Monday 20th Feb 2017, the 6 track offering demonstrates the musical mavericks flirting with an alchemy of influences pulled from dark-wave, post-punk, goth rock, psychedelia, electro pop and new-wave. The act consisting of Mik Davis and Steve Maloney mesh together a seductively hypnotic world of synth grooves, twisted guitar sounds, electronic beats and melodic vocal hooks. The chemistry between the creators has propelled They Called Him Zone on to radio airwaves across the globe and secured respect from underground media and fans alike.

Charity Gig in Aid Of  - St Cuthbert’s Hospice...

Featuring Two Great Local Bands – After Midnight & The Fix

Durham Gala Theatre, Tuesday 21 February 2017

A Charity Gig will be held at Durham Gala Theatre in February to raise funds for one of the best-loved hospices in the Durham area – St Cuthbert’s Hospice, Durham. The show will feature two popular local bands – The Fix and After Midnight who will each be performing sets of 60’s and 70’s classic pop & rock hits.

The gig will take place at Durham Gala Theatre on Tuesday 21 February. Doors open 7pm, First band (The Fix) on stage 7.30pm.  Tickets priced £10 are available from the box office, Tel: 03000 266600 and on-line at www.galadurham.co.uk  Fans are advised to book early to avoid disappointment.

The Fix are a 4-piece band from Chester-le-Street which includes three Knowles brothers – Tom, Robin (lead guitar) & Peter (bass) plus drummer & “soul brother” Terry Goulding. They originally came together as Tom’s Thumbs in the sixties. Front-man and lead vocalist Tom Knowles also plays guitar and keyboards. In the seventies he was in two very successful recording bands Kestrel & Goldie. Kestrel were one of the first progressive rock bands who made a self-titled album which achieved cult status and has recently been re-released in Japan. Goldie had an international hit record “Making Up Again” and Tom appeared on Top of The Pops with the band. The Fix will perform an entertaining set of 60’s covers including hits by The Who, Creation, Bob Dylan, The Kinks and many more.

After Midnight performed their first gig in December 1985 in Newcastle.  Since then there have been many highlights, including support slots with Doctor Feelgood, Steve Marriott & Jethro Tull.  They are best known for their Eric Clapton tribute concerts under the name CLASSIC CLAPTON.  In 2015 they undertook a 30th Anniversary UK Tour  which culminated in a sold out concert at Sage Gateshead.  In recent years they have performed throughout the UK & Ireland including concerts at The Royal Festival Hall, London and a triumphant appearance at Glastonbury Festival in 2002.  They have performed numerous gigs in Europe including Spain, Estonia, Holland and France. In 2009 they appeared in Mumbai.  They were honored to be invited back for 3 more concerts in India in January 2016.

TYNE TEES TELEVISION made a programme about them called 'COVER THEIR TRACKS'.  They filmed the band's concert at Newcastle Opera House, in front of 600 fans.  It was shown in 2000 leading to national recognition.

After Midnight also comprises 4 local musicians:-  Mike Hall (lead vocals/guitar), Paul Warren (keyboards/ backing vocals), Danny Davison (drums) and Dave Robson (bass guitar /backing vocals).  Dave is a former member of chart band Geordie.  In fact he was with them at the time Brian Johnson left to join AC/DC.  Front-man Mike was born in Durham and attended Durham Johnston School.  Many of Mike’s friends and family still live in and around Durham City.  Paul is from Darlington and Danny & Dave are from Newcastle.

For this special charity gig After Midnight will be performing covers of music by The Beatles, The Eagles, Free, Steely Dan, Dire Straits, Eric Clapton and a number of 60’s and 70’s classics. They will even include at least one of Dave’s original compositions.  NB: this will NOT be an Eric Clapton Tribute Gig.

Most of After Midnight’s previous appearances at the Gala Theatre have sold out but they have not appeared there since 2014.  Both bands have a large following in the Durham area so demand should be high especially when the purpose of the show is to raise much needed funds for such a worthy cause.

St Cuthbert’s Hospice, Merryoaks, Durham opened in 1988. Initially the Hospice offered day care two days per week, and over the years it expanded to offer care each weekday. Major changes came in September 2006, with the opening of a ten bed In Patient Unit following a fundraising campaign. The extension allowed the Hospice to provide 24 hour care for the first time. Since opening, the unit has cared for over 500 people, proving that there was a great need for the services on offer. Their mission is to make every day count for those affected by life-limiting illnesses and to provide all-embracing, compassionate and individualised care to all those affected by life-limiting illnesses, at a time and a place that is right for them

We have a presence across several forms of social media, including Facebook, Twitter, and You-Tube. Our Facebook page has gained over 160 likes in this week alone and we are keen to keep building interest in the music we’re producing.
Our first song, “Secrets,” produced by founder Matty Stokoe, 20, has already received air time on BBC Radio Newcastle thanks to Nick Roberts, and is currently available on iTunes and Spotify.
Statik Records has brought together a variety of students together as part of the project from across the North East and beyond, and we’re determined to make it a success.
For example, “Secrets” has a music video created by David Bell, a filmmaking student at Manchester University.
The video has been viewed over 2000 times on Facebook as of 14/11/2016.
Hexham-born Matty is a second-year music student at Sunderland University. As well as producing music, he is also a singer/songwriter and has performed at venues across the North East.
Website design, our social media campaign and publicity are also being handled by students from Northumbria university.
We have three more songs, also produced by Matty, set to be released in the coming weeks.
Our label is looking to sign up talented, up and coming local artists and give them a method of distributing their work.
The formation of this record label is a serious signal of intent – hopefully, it is the first step on the road to success.

CLASSIC CLAPTON - unplugged...

Cluny 2, Ouseburn, Newcastle

Friday 18 November, 8pm

Mike Hall and Adam Howells from CLASSIC CLAPTON the World's No1 Eric Clapton Tribute Band will perform a rare acoustic concert at Cluny2, 34 Lime Street, Ouseburn, Newcastle on Friday 18 November as part of their 30th Anniversary Tour. Doors open at 7.30pm. Mike & Adam will be on stage at 8pm and will perform 2 x 45 minute sets.  Tickets priced £7 in advance (£8 on the door) are available from The Cluny - Tel:  0191 230 4474     Visit the venue’s website:-   www.thecluny.com  Mike has performed numerous sold out Christmas shows at The Cluny in recent years with his band After Midnight. Fans are therefore advised to book early for this special gig.

The band was formed in 1985 in Newcastle long before the term “tribute band” was invented. In guitar/vocalist Mike Hall, the band possesses a front man who not only looks like Eric, he sings and plays guitar like him too!  In 1999, Mike won a national look-alike competition held at Madam Tussauds, London. Mike has met Slowhand twice, and even received a message of encouragement from the guitar maestro (written on a Concorde menu).  In 2001 the band were honored to perform at Eric Clapton's Fan Club Convention in London.

TYNE TEES TELEVISION were so impressed that they made a programme about them, called 'COVER THEIR TRACKS'.  It was shown in 2000 and received rave reviews, leading to national recognition.

Since then, they have continued to perform throughout the UK including concerts at The Royal Festival Hall, London and a triumphant appearance on the Acoustic Stage at Glastonbury Festival in 2002.  They have performed numerous concerts in Europe including Spain, Estonia, Holland & France.  In 2009 they appeared for the first time in Mumbai. A 10,000 mile round-trip for one gig but it was a great experience.  They were invited back for 3 more concerts in India in January this year. This included performing in front of 3500 people in Mumbai.
You can see a photo album plus videos from the 2016 Indian tour on their Facebook page:- www.facebook.com/classicclapton

In the past 30 years CLASSIC CLAPTON (aka After Midnight) has become one of the best-loved bands on Tyneside. They have chosen Cluny2 for this one-off acoustic concert because it is one of the best and most intimate small theatre spaces in the north east.  The Cluny has deservedly acquired great reputation for championing live music.

For this unplugged concert, Mike & Adam will both sing & play acoustic guitar. Their show is based around Slowhand's multi-million selling album ''Eric Clapton / unplugged'' - Eric's best-selling album ever, winning numerous Grammies and being responsible for his resurgence as a world superstar in the 90's.

CLASSIC CLAPTON unplugged will include many of the best tracks from Eric's unplugged album, including Tears in Heaven, Before You Accuse Me, Nobody Knows You When You're Down And Out, Running on Faith, Alberta, Old Love and of course Layla.  The concert will also feature new acoustic versions of other Clapton Classics such as Wonderful Tonight, Lay Down Sally, Promises, Change the World and While My Guitar Gently Weeps.

CLASSIC CLAPTON have released three albums.  Firstly “THE MUSIC OF ERIC CLAPTON” contains brilliant cover-versions of 17 Clapton Classics.  Their second album is a live double CD ''CLASSIC CLAPTON Unplugged''  recorded at Belfast Waterfront Hall.  In 2005 they released their third album “CLASSIC CREAM” – featuring 20 songs by the sixties supergroup.  All three albums will be available for purchase at The Cluny.

Eric Clapton has been a major international star since the mid 1960's, when he revolutionised electric guitar playing, with his virtuoso performances in John Mayall's Bluesbreakers.  He has won an incredible 19 Grammies and is the only triple inductee into The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (as a member of The Yardbirds, Cream and as a solo artist).

Eric is now in his seventies.  He released a new studio album in May 2016 entitled “I Still Do”.  His recent tours unfortunately have visited only a limited number of large UK arenas.  It is unlikely that Eric would ever undertake an Unplugged Tour.  If fans want to hear all of his hits played live & unplugged in more intimate surroundings, they should attend a CLASSIC CLAPTON Unplugged concert.  The whole of Clapton's illustrious career will be covered including Cream, John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, Blind Faith, The Yardbirds, Derek & The Dominos and the solo years.

Middlesbrough's (UK) audacious crusader of Alternative Lo-fi/Folk 'James Kruman' invites you into his universe with the release of his free download single 'Julia'.
Lifted from Kruman's debut album 'Twitch' set for independent release later in 2016, 'Julia' is a hauntingly delicate piano led track glistening with melancholy and showcases just one dimension of this atypical and unpredictable songwriter. Drawing upon influences such as Lou Reed/Velvet Underground, Joy Division, Stephen Fretwell, Low and Patti Smith, the creative mind of Kruman is one with the vision to stand out from the crowd of emerging artists. Some artists exist in the comfort zone of replicating their hero's and others aspire to push boundaries and establish their own distinct voice. James Kruman strives for the latter; a uniquely recognisable identity and persona.
Following a re-location to Manchester (UK), James Kruman retreated into his spare room armed with an 8 track recorder. The outcome was the 10 track offering that is 'Twitch'. Spiralling as far from commercial as possible, his courageous approach to his music flows with lo-fi integrity which embraces imperfections. Lyrically inspired by real life experiences, Kruman's approach to song writing is often abstractly poetic and at times laced with quirky humour. Fans who like their music obscure and abjectly weird, can expect 'Twitch' to deliver a journey from folk inspired acoustic guitar work through to psych-gaze tinged cacophonous madness.
Having pathed his reputation on the North East gig circuit since 2013, the one man multi-instrumentalist has built a solid fan base with his captivating live shows and regular support from BBC Tees Introducing. The cross-genre appeal of Kruman has seen him open stages for credible indie acts such as Mark Morriss (Bluetones), Tom Hingley (Inspiral Carpets) right through to the award winner folk singer 'Bella Hardy'. James Kruman shall be marching out across the UK on tour later in 2016, bringing his musical freak show to life with a full live band.
